At our daily meals.

How does this bread supply help you?
We are very grateful for the bread. It is particularly important to me to emphasize that for many people this donation of bread may only be a small help. However, in my opinion, many small things can make a huge difference.

Adel Wahsh

What’s your name?
Adel Wahsh, 52 yeas old.

Why do you get bread from us every day?
Unfortunately, I have only one arm and so I can’t work very well.

You also get more bread in addition to your own. Who is it for?
Various families in Bethlehem.

Can you describe the circumstances of the people we supply with bread?
Most families are poor because many families have no jobs. Others lack a family member like the father, who otherwise provides the daily bread.

How do people react to the bread?
Of course the people are reserved, that’s their culture – but they are very grateful for the donated bread.

What else would you like to tell us?
I like to distribute the bread to the needy and hope that it will continue without ceasing.

You get free bread every day from the House of Bread.
Who do you pass it on to?
I work in my brother’s shop. Many people don’t have enough money to buy enough food. I supply up to 10 families daily.

Can you describe the situation of the people who are
supplied with bread?
These people live in different circumstances. For example, every day a deaf-mute man comes by with his brother to pick up bread. But many of the recipients are also widows who have to take care of their families on their own.

How do people react to the bread?
The people are very grateful because the bread really helps them in their everyday life.

What else would you like to tell us?
I like to distribute the bread very much. It makes me happy. However, I wish that these people would be helped even more.

You work for the House of Bread. You pick up the bread
at the bakery and deliver it. To whom do you deliver the
bread?
To various families, charitable institutions and fellow human beings who also pass the bread on to needy neighbours and acquaintances.

Can you describe the circumstances of the people who are supplied with bread by the House of Bread?
Most of the bread goes to the four charitable institutions. They do a very good and worthwhile job. I am glad that the House of Bread supports these institutions.

Who else do you supply
Different families. For example, there is a family with three
children. Unfortunately, their father died of a heart attack. Or another family that I am allowed to care for, lost their mother to cancer. She leaves behind four daughters and two sons.
All in all, I mainly supply widows, people with disabilities, poor people and many orphans.

How do people react to the bread?
The families wait for me and thank me. Then they bless me! The institutions deal with it very professionally, but you can see that they appreciate the daily fresh bread very much.

What’s your name?
Elias Boaz Abu Zuluf (28 aged).

What is your function at the House of Bread?
I am the local director of the House of Bread, Bethlehem and, if time permits, I am happy to personally accompany the bread deliveries.

What are your personal feelings and impressions about the
bread deliveries?
The children who live in the institutes we supply have grown very close to my heart. In particular, I would like to mention the nuns from the house of the Jesus children. It is very moving to see how caring, loving and self-sacrificing the sisters are for these poor, handicapped children.

What else would you like to tell us?
For me personally it is really beautiful to serve God and to help
people at the same time. I really feel that this is a valuable service to raise the name of our Lord and to help others. Our daily bread is normously important for all of us. Therefore, it is only fair to share this among all of us. It is a grace and a gift to work for the House of Bread. It is so exciting to see what the House of Bread can still do in the City of Bread (Bethlehem).

Mariam

What’s your name and where are you from originally?
My name is Mariam and I come from Argentina.

What is your role in this institution?
I am active as a nun in the house of the Jesus children.

Can you please briefly describe your work?
Together with my religious sisters, I look after 34 children who live in our house. Most of the children are very severely disabled and many were abandoned by their parents. Through our commitment we aim to help them to live in dignity. We give them our love.

Does the bread delivered daily by the House of Bread help
you?
We are very grateful for it and if we receive too much we pass it on to the poor in our neighbourhood.

Why do you do this job?
(Mariam smiles) It’s my calling, it’s like living here with my own
family.

My name is Nidal Al Hashlamoun (51 years old). I’m the owner of this hairdressing business.

You get daily deliveries of bread from the House of Bread.
However, this bread is not intended for you. Who do you
pass it on to?
Some families in Bethlehem. I have known most of them for 30
years.

Could you please describe the situation of the people who
are supplied with bread by the House of Bread?
Most of these families are refugees and have lived in a refugee camp since the 1967 war. Many of them come from Jerusalem. As my business is on the edge of this camp, I have contact with many needy people.

How do you choose people to receive bread?
Most people come up to me and ask me for help, because they know in the meantime that I pass on bread. I am happy to pass on the bread to these families.

What else would you like to tell us?
I have a wish. It is of great personal concern to me that the House of Bread does not stop delivering these loaves. The people need this bread very urgently and it helps them. I love to help, it makes me happy.

What’s your position at the House of Hope?
I am the head of the House of Hope.

How do they use the bread from House of Bread?
We can cover up to 3 meals a day with the donated bread.

To what extent does the bread help them?
In the past we received bread donations from a bakery. However, this bread was not fresh every day, it was merchandise that could no longer be sold. We are very grateful for the daily fresh bread. These children are also entitled to fresh bread.
